IBS is a chronic, multisymptom disorder affecting about 25-45 million Americans. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, bloating, gas and altered bowel habits (eg, diarrhea and/or constipation).

There are several subtypes of IBS, including IBS-D. Those with IBS-D typically experience recurring diarrhea and abdominal pain or discomfort. Although estimates may vary, about 15 million American adults may suffer from IBS-D.
